Roof windows are an excellent way of using natural light to transform your space.

With roof windows, it’s important that you pick the right flashing to weather-proof your window and protect it from the elements.

With VELUX offering different types of flashing, it can be difficult knowing which one is right for your roof.

That’s why we’ve put together this guide on everything you need to know about VELUX flashings, so you know exactly what you need.

 

Installation height

The new VELUX generation of windows offers flashings at two main heights, standard and recessed.

The standard installation height is where the roof window and flashings are usually installed, making the window slightly stand out from your roof.

Alternatively, recessed installations are installed 40mm deeper into your roof. This creates a sleeker, more streamlined appearance in your roof. Recessed installation can also offer greater energy efficiency, cutting your energy costs.

Flashing types.  

VELUX has five categories of flashing. Choosing the right type depends on the type of roofing material you have, as well as your roof pitch (the angle of height your roof has) and if you want standard or recessed installation heights.

 

Plain tiles

Plain tiles sit flatly on your roof.

The plain tile category of VELUX roof flashings is EDP/EBP/EKP.

The category fits all plain tiles up to a maximum thickness of 14mm. This type of flashing can be used only with standard installation on roof pitches between 25° and 90°.

 

Roof tiles

This is the overlapping or curved shaped roof tile and has two main VELUX flashing categories.

For standard installation heights, roof tiles can be used with the EDW/EBW/EKW flashings.

This category of flashing fits all flat and profiled roof tiles up to 120mm in thickness on roof pitches between 15° and 90°.

If you prefer recessed installation heights, the VELUX EDJ/EKJ category of flashing is what you need.

However, the EDJ/EKJ category is only suitable for flat and profiled roof tiles up to 90mm in thickness and roof pitches between 20° and 90°.

 

Slate tiles

Slate tiles have two types of VELUX flashing.

For slate up to 8mm thick, the VELUX flashing categories are dependent on your preference for standard or recessed installation heights.

For standard installation on pitches between 15° and 90°, use the EDL/EBL/EKL flashing category.

If you prefer recessed installation and your roof pitch is between 20° and 90°, use the EDN/EKN flashing category.

Both these categories are unsuitable for interlocking slate tiles. For interlocking slate, thatch and profiled sheeting roofs, use the EDW/EBW/EKW flashing category for roof tiles.
