Based in Denmark, The VKR Group is the company that manufactures our three brands of roof window – Velux, Dakea and Aurora – the latter of which is exclusive to LB Supplies. With a presence in more than 40 countries and employing around 14,000 people, The VKR Group is one of the world’s largest companies in the building products industry. In 2013, The VKR Group’s revenue amounted to Euro 2.2 billion and net profit for the year came to Euro 105.7 million
Besides specialising in roof windows and skylights, The VKR Group activities in the following business areas: vertical windows, solar thermal energy as well as ventilation & indoor climate.
The company was founded in 1941 by Villum Kann Rasmussen, MSc in structural engineering. Villum developed the Velux roof window in 1942, which represented a major breakthrough for the company. Why did Villum choose the name Velux? Because ‘VE’ is short for ventilation and ‘LUX’ is latin for light.
Over the years, Villum registered more than 55 patents and nine designs, receiving an honorary doctorate at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) for his work as an inventor, experimental scientist, and entrepreneur.
Villum Kann Rasmussen felt that some of the company profits should be fed back into the community, which is why Villum Fonden and Velux Fonden were formed. Both support support scientific, artistic, cultural and social purposes as well as daylight research and older people’s activity
